The International Organization for Standardization, known “ISO” (after the Greek word isos for equal) began developing the ISO 14000 International Environmental Management Standards in 1992.  The ISO 14001 EMS specification Standard was promulgated in September 1996.  The primary objective of the standards is to provide a process-oriented approach to environmental management that allows companies everywhere:
