Government- Highlighted Project Experience
Navarre Beach State Park, Escambia County , FL
Project Type: Restoration
Navarre Beach State Park located on Santa Rosa Island in Escambia County, Florida, was nearly completely destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Dennis in 2005. In 2007, Florida DEP contracted Peter Brown Construction Company to demolish damaged structures, remove debris, filter the beach sand of foreign materials such as gravel and asphalt, and rebuild the road ways, utility infrastructure, picnic shelters, bath houses, ranger residences, and other buildings on the property. LG2ES was subcontracted to implement all elements of the Environmental Protection Plan, the most important of which was migratory bird nesting pursuant to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Sea turtles nesting sites.
LG2ES began by performing a detailed protected species survey of the property to document the current use and potential habitat of certain target species, particularly the Santa Rosa Beach Mouse, least tern, and snowy plover. A detailed transect survey as well as a trap and release program confirmed the absence of Beach Mouse on the property. As the project progressed into nesting season, numerous least terns were observed nesting in key areas of the site.

Nesting locations were located by GPS, a safe distance radius was marked and fenced to prohibit entry, and the nests were monitored throughout the season to document nest protection and fledging. LG2ES was successful in directing all construction activity to avoid nest areas while still assisting the contractor in keeping in budget and on time.
Total LG2ES project cost-approximately $80,000.
